Final Results from KPI Development and QFD Method for Evaluating Alternative Systems in SAFeCRAFT

Deliverable D2.4, led by National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), presents a structured approach to carry out the Quality Function Deployment method for evaluating the project demonstrator and desktop studies. Based on the Quality Function Deployment method, the requirements (KPIs) of the SAFeCRAFT project were defined, namely the environmental impact, the solution adaptability, the regulatory compliance, the commercial uptake, the technical aspects, the energy efficiency, the bunkering requirements, the financial implications, the health and safety, the training and competence, the bunkering optimization, the life cycle assessment and the social acceptance. The assessment metrics proposed for each KPI, are expected to assist the team in developing the best solution at a more detailed level.

The requirements (KPIs) were weighted by the consortium members in order to highlight the importance assigned to each requirement. In the developed questionnaire, all requirements were weighted above 7 (on a scale of 1-10) indicating the high importance given by the Consortium partners. The most important requirements to be considered are the energy efficiency, the environmental impact and health and safety.

The project requirements (KPIs) led to functional features (characteristics) necessary to satisfy these needs. In order to meet the requirements, the project Consortium determined the functional features for the project solution which are health and safety, the regulatory compliance, the comparative assessment of alternative systems, the optimized ship arrangement, the emission reduction and the smart digitalisation. Taking into consideration both the technical importance score and the difficulty level of each functional feature, the priority rank of the functional features emerged. It resulted that health and safety, the regulatory compliance and the comparative assessment of alternative systems have the highest rank.

The results from the Quality Function Deployment method will be taken into consideration in order to provide recommendations for the development priorities regarding each functional feature.
