Engineering Desktop Studies for Alternative Fuel Integration in SAFeCRAFT

Led by HYDRUS Engineering, Task 4.3 focuses on the development of basic engineering packages for a series of desktop studies examining the integration of alternative fuel supply and powertrain solutions into representative vessel concepts.

Within this task, the SAFeCRAFT consortium is carrying out detailed engineering activities covering key technical areas, including system layouts, auxiliary systems, piping and instrumentation diagrams, structural design considerations, materials evaluation and selection, as well as vessel particulars. These activities are supported by engineering calculations and simulations, ensuring that the proposed solutions are technically sound and feasible.

In parallel, the desktop studies assess the energy efficiency, decarbonisation performance, and techno-economic viability of the selected alternative fuel systems. This holistic approach allows the project to evaluate not only the technical readiness of the solutions, but also their potential environmental and economic impact.

A key outcome of Task 4.3 is the submission of the engineering results to the relevant Classification Societies, with the objective of obtaining an Approval in Principle (AiP) or an equivalent status. This validation step confirms the adequacy of the engineering work and supports the transition of the proposed solutions towards future real-scale implementation.

Through Task 4.3, SAFeCRAFT strengthens the link between engineering design, regulatory acceptance, and practical deployment, contributing to safer, more efficient, and more sustainable maritime transport.
