Navigating Regulatory Gaps: Ensuring SAF Compliance and Environmental Excellence in Maritime Transport

This task, led by University of Strathclyde, will map the current International and National regulatory frameworks, e.g., the applicable rules, regulations, standards, design criteria and technology qualification processes. Attention will be given to all the systems, subassemblies and components related to SAFs application onboard, as well as their auxiliary systems. Furthermore, possible gaps in the current regulatory framework will be identified and development of new regulation proposals will be possibly supported at both EU and IMO/IACS levels.
The environmental expectations from the different SAF options will be addressed. The applicability of SAFs in the maritime field with respect to the strictest environmental regulations, such as those referring to passenger vessels and environmentally sensitive regions, will be demonstrated. Compliance with international regulations concerning GHG emission performance targets will be investigated on short-, mid- and long-term perspectives.
