Comprehensive Evaluation of Sustainable Maritime Fuel Solutions: Defining Data Requirements for Desktop Studies in New Builds and Retrofits

In this task RINA is leading the definition of the desktop studies and will outline the data required. Since comparison between different desktop studies may significantly vary from retrofitting to new building strategies both options will be considered: 2 new building (containership & tanker) and 4 retrofit (containership, tanker, RoPax, cruise vessel). Four alternative sustainable alternative fuels will be considered: LH2, CGH2, NH3 and LOHC with combination of three different powertrain options: a) large-scale fuel cells stacks combined with adequately sized marine-type battery packs, b) internal combustion Hydrogen-fed main engines and c) internal combustion Hydrogen-fed generator providing power to a shaft motor (PTI), in parallel to the conventional main engine(s).

In total 48 cases are defined. RINA with the support of the whole consortium will perform an initial screening of the alternatives considering feasibility and regulatory constraints, as well as utilising the KPIs developed in the project for the evaluation of the remaining solutions.

A workshop will be organised where relevant members of the External Advisory Board will be involved. This task will pave the way for the well-to-wake feasibility evaluation and the engineering design of the proposed desktop studies. Through the lessons learned from this process, technical guidelines for the acceleration of the pertinent technologies will be developed.
